Lenovo's 55-Inch Idea Android HDTV with Ice Cream Sandwich

Chinese PC maker Lenovo’s just trotted out a spankin’ new 55-inch HDTV at CES. It runs Ice Cream Sandwich, comes in 55-inch or 42-inch sizes, and allows you to stream content wirelessly from tablets, phones, computers, as well as from a 200 GBs of cloud storage provided by Lenovo. It almost makes you forget about Apple’s upcoming Siri-enabled TV set.

Previously, we took a sneak peek on Lenovo’s Android-powered TV set, and today, the company unveiled the final version at CES. Called the Lenovo K91 Smart TV, the TV set will initially be available only in China (damn!). The TV comes with a custom Android 4.0 interface, which Lenovo is calling the “Sandwich Screen.” What does it mean? Well, the giant comprised of three smart TV pieces: video on-demand (VOD), apps, and standard TV functionality. Users will need to use a touchpad on the TV’s remote to navigate with swipes between the standard TV feed, VOD, and an applications screen. According to Gizmodo, all of the VOD content is streamed via Lenovo’s servers to the the TVs, and the VOD service offers home viewers the option to stream a wide array of documentaries, movies and drama.

Under the hood, the K91 is also the first TV to be powered by Qualcomm’s 1.5 GHz dual-core SnapDragon 8060 CPU that makes snapping from one game to another very quick. On the rear of the TV’s right side are four USB ports, a microSD card slot, a full-size Ethernet jack and HDMI-in. For people who want to make video calls from the living room, there’s a five megapixel webcam built into the bezel. What’s more, the TV is LED-backlit, 3D-ready, and has a 240 Hz mode that reduce motion blur in fast-moving images. It also comes with built-in Wi-Fi, 8GB of internal storage, and 1GB of RAM.

Bundled with the TV set are two remote controls — one that looks very much like a traditional clicker and the other specifically for gaming.

The traditional clicker has a capacitive touch control, letting users swipe through the menus. It also features an integrated mic. As for the gamepad, it features a 3-axis gyroscope just like Apple’s iPhone 4. According to Engadget, the TV set can also support up to four users on four separate remotes, allowing for an entire family or group of friends to interact. That actually transforms the TV into a game console!
The TV comes preloaded with a hundred of apps, and Lenovo promises the apps will be optimized to run great on Android 4.0.
